Airway Assessment in Grand Rapids

A dental airway assessment looks at how your teeth, jaws, tongue posture, and breathing patterns may relate to symptoms such as snoring, mouth breathing, and restless sleep. It helps identify questions that deserve further evaluation and whether dental care, sleep testing, or another provider may be part of your next step.

At Complete Health Dentistry, we start by listening to your story. Our goal is to understand the possible contributors to your symptoms before discussing treatment.

Request an Airway Evaluation

When is an airway evaluation worth considering?

You might bring up airway concerns if you regularly breathe through your mouth, snore, wake with a dry mouth, or feel unrefreshed after sleep. Tooth wear, grinding, morning jaw tension, and a narrow or crowded dental arch may also be worth discussing. These findings can have several causes; none proves that you have sleep apnea or need an expander.

For children, tell us about persistent mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, and concerns about jaw development. Evaluation and next steps should fit the child’s age and individual needs.

What does a dental airway assessment look at?

Your symptoms and health history

We discuss sleep quality, breathing concerns, dental history, and what you hope to improve. Bring any prior sleep-study results and information about current treatment.

Jaw development and dental findings

We consider the relationship between your teeth and jaws, available tongue space, palate shape, bite, and signs of tooth wear. The focus is on how these findings fit together.

Breathing and oral function

Nasal versus mouth breathing, resting tongue position, and how the lips and facial muscles function can offer useful information. Persistent nasal obstruction may need assessment by a medical provider.

Imaging when appropriate

Our practice uses CBCT imaging to examine three-dimensional dental and skeletal anatomy. Imaging is considered according to the clinical question; it does not replace a sleep study or diagnose sleep apnea by itself.

How is this different from a sleep study?

A dental assessment evaluates oral anatomy, function, and possible risk factors. A sleep study evaluates breathing and other measurements during sleep. If your history suggests a sleep-related breathing disorder, further medical evaluation or sleep testing may be recommended. A qualified medical provider interprets the findings and determines the diagnosis.

Understanding your options comes before choosing treatment

The findings guide the conversation. Depending on your needs, that may include orthodontic and myofunctional care, an evaluation for MARPE and adult palatal expansion, or discussion of sleep apnea and oral appliance therapy. Some people need a different type of evaluation rather than a dental appliance.

Questions about airway assessments

Does an airway assessment diagnose sleep apnea?

No. A dental evaluation can identify concerns and help guide referral. Sleep apnea requires appropriate medical evaluation and sleep testing.

Does everyone need a CBCT scan?

No. Imaging should be based on your history, examination, and clinical need. We discuss what information an image could add before recommending it.

Will I automatically need MARPE or an oral appliance?

No. Treatment depends on the findings and your goals. A narrow palate, snoring, or fatigue alone does not establish that a particular treatment is right for you.

What should I bring?

Bring your medication list, relevant medical and dental records, prior sleep-study reports if available, and notes about your symptoms or current sleep treatment.
